Delia Kinmont

Delia Kinmont commenced studying the violin at the age of eight.

Her first teacher was a lovely English lady, Mrs Rose Hewitt. (She actually lived in the same street!) This was to be a very significant relationship, as when Mrs Hewitt retired, she gave Delia her beautiful Matthew Hardie violin (circa 1800), which was originally purchased from John & Arthur Beare in London in 1947. Delia still plays this violin in the Orchestra.

Elizabeth Morgan was her next teacher, and Delia graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Music (performance), studying violin with her.

Delia then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Music (performance) at the Tasmanian Conservatorium, studying with Jan Sedivka.

After finishing her studies, Delia auditioned successfully for the Queensland Theatre Orchestra, which later became the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. (A fascinating fact - Delia and Warwick Adeney both won jobs on the same day in the Queensland Theatre Orchestra!) It was in QPO that she met her future husband, cellist, Matthew Kinmont.

Delia held a fulltime position with QPO for eight years, and then resigned and became a freelance violinist, whilst maintaining a large teaching practice.

The next stage of life included balancing family life with three children, freelancing and teaching.

When the children were in primary school, Delia thought the time seemed right to start auditioning again for a full-time violin position. Delia auditioned and won her current job in 2010, and has been a very happy member of the Section Violin section ever since!

Delia shares a love of chamber music with her husband, Matthew, and together they have participated in many chamber music performances.
