Kate Lawson

Kate Lawson grew up in Sydney, Australia, and holds a Bachelor degree from the Sydney Conservatorium, where she studied with Rosamund Plummer.

She completed her Masters degree at the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague under Thies Roorda. Before moving to Brisbane she was Principal Flute of the Hong Kong Sinfonetta, one of Asia’s most dynamic orchestras. Kate has played flute and piccolo throughout Australia, including with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and West Australian Symphony. Internationally she has performed as a guest of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Residentie Orkest (Hague Philharmonic), Limburgs Symphony, Madrid Symphony, New Zealand Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Malaysian Philharmonic and The Macau Orchestra. Before moving to Brisbane she was Principal Flute of the Hong Kong Sinfonetta, one of Asia’s most dynamic orchestras.

In 2012, Kate was invited to give the world premiere performance of ‘Soliloquy’, a new work for solo flute by prominent American composer John Williams. She has also appeared as a soloist with orchestra in works ranging from Vivaldi to Malcolm Arnold. In 2009, she was invited by Vienna Philharmonic principal flute Walter Auer to participate in the orchestra’s prestigious Summer Academy. She was a fellow of the Sydney Symphony in 2008 and was honoured to play two private concerts for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Australia. Kate is an alumna of the Sydney, Australian and Netherlands Youth Orchestras.
